Ahh I love to reminisce about my babies and the days they were born... it's such a life-changing moment. This time TWO YEARS AGO (wha?) David and I brought our shiny new baby boy into a very chilly world (-10°C outside!). 17 days late my boy was, but I remember like yesterday how we wrapped him up at 4am in the morning to leave the hospital, literally freezing out (in hindsight what were we thinking?!) and walking through our front door, greeted by my two very tired parents who had been waiting up for us. I remember my mum saying to me, 'You walked in with the biggest smile on your face'. And I did. I was totally exuberant. I spent the next two weeks on cloud 9.
Fast forward two years and I am still exuberant... most of the time! I have days when all three are screaming around the dinner table or destroying the house, and I would just like to go outside for a loooong walk, and then the are the other days, the majority when the things they do or say just make me beam with love and pride for my children. Back to Sonny.... (who, by the way, got his name from Santino 'Sonny' Carleone in the Godfather, yep betcha didn't know that).
My boy is two... that is officially a Big Boy. Yelp.
Despite his (rare) explosive 2-year-old-throw-on-the-floor tantrums, he completely melts my heart and I am his. Which he knows, and exploits at every opportunity. I'll be cooking in the kitchen, and this little person will come up and give my leg a cuddle, peering up at me with enormous marble eyes and fluffy golden hair, and I find myself just giving him whatever he wants (the girls are like, what? How come Sonny gets one and we don't?). He has started to hold my hand when we go out for walks, and I just want to pause time and put it in a bottle so I can remember that feeling forever. I love love love just having a good old cuddle and dance around the kitchen with the radio LOUD while the girls are at school, and the washing up is sitting in a bowl of bubbles, squeezing him so tightly that he shrieks with laughter. He has such a dirty little giggle like his older sister, it's completely impossible not to laugh along with him, even when he is in the middle of doing something very naughty!!
David and I were talking about Sonny the other day, and what he reminds us of. Some sort of lion cub/ cave baby is a very apt description of him. I am convinced he is the double of Cave Baby by Julia Donaldson. I'm not sure if me reading it so much to the girls when I was pregnant somehow influenced his personality. Not only does he look just like him, but he also very much enjoys walking around with practically nothing on. He is also very fond of writing on the walls, (he has a favourite spot in the heart of our lounge, proudly displaying his art for all visitors to see). He seems to have a special language which can only be described as grunts and combinations of clicks that I can't even begin to replicate. (He is either trying to speak a primitive language to us or he has absorbed too much of Star Wars and is speaking Wookie). Though he has mastered the important words, 'No' (WOW there are a lot of ways to use this word!), and occasionally 'mum-ma'. Most of the time it's 'Noooo', or 'Noooo mummy'. Or just 'no no no no no' with a few weirdo clicks and growls thrown in. Yeah that's how he rolls.
I love seeing him as this little mini person, he's just such a happy little boy. He can often be found lying on the floor, pink muzzy in one hand and toy car in the other (the Boy Toy cancels out the pink muzzy... so my husband says). He would happily stay like that for a good half an hour, just lying there in a quiet daze. Or he goes to the other extreme, wrestling the muzzy to its untimely death or throwing it silly across the room, only to retrieve it and give it a cuddle. He also patiently allows his two older sisters to fuss over him and dress him up in all sorts of mad ensembles - I do have to praise them for their creativity!
One of my favourite things at the moment is finding him sat on our large sofa. Which might sound really silly... but it takes him such effort to get up there as it is so high up and he is so little. (Legs flailing around trying to grab purchase) And just seeing him there, sat transfixed watching something on telly, in a little white poppered vest (I will keep him in these forever I have decided!) and his little skinny naked legs in front of him. He looks so small and vulnerable when he is like this, and I just have to go over to him and give him the biggest squishy squeeze imaginable. Ooh yeah! Love him.
So happy birthday my darling little boy... here are a few moments I was able to grab one quiet morning while we played with balloons and toy cars. ❤︎
